Top 10 Burglary Hotspots in the UK

The chances of being burgled in the UK are still high hence the need to house contents insurance – here are the top 20 areas.

Research undertaken recently show the top 20 hotspots in the UK for being the victim of a burglary. Most burglaries are opportunists who don’t plan the crime in the first place but see an opportunitity to take something quickly from a persons home.

In reality the research shows that it doesn’t matter if you live in the north or south of England because the hotspots are spread far and wide and over 700,000 domestic burglaries happen each year. Mostly it’s not the homeowners fault but with these high numbers the chances of it happening to you are quite high (hence the need to get cheap contents insurance….)

Here’s are the hotspots in the UK:

  • DN7 – Doncaster
  • BS7 – Bristol
  • SS8 – Canvey Island
  • NG8 – Nottingham
  • B15 – Birmingham
  • TW8 – Brentford
  • SE27 – West Norwood
  • S5 – Sheffield
  • NW7 – Mill Hill, North West London
  • EH14 – Edinburgh
  • N8 – Crouch End
  • OL2 – Oldham
  • HU9 – Hull
  • RG3 – Reading
  • SK3 – Stockport
  • KT2 – Kingston upon Thames
  • LS17 – Leeds
  • EC1V – North East City of London
  • GL4 – Gloucester
  • SW16 – Streatham

So unlucky people living in Doncaster – lock up your windows and doors and keep things off display. Of course all the insurance companies know this data from their own claims figures and because insurers now share data can pool their resources so know exactly which areas have the highest crime rates and adjust their premiums accordingly.

As with all insurance it’s best to get a few quotes to compare companies. So don’t risk losing everything because there is great competition in the market place. Many insurers offer very cheap or even free contents insurance (especially if you purchase with another product such as buildings insurance.)

Some other policies may also cover your own possessions in any case such as a parent’s policy for their sons and daughters if they are moving to university (check first of course) and may be a car insurance policy may cover your possessions on your travels. You’ll need house contents insurance if you are a tenant or certainly to cover items that are fixtures in your home and you don’t carry them around with you.

With the cost of electrical items soaring such as flat screen televisions and the likelihood of domestic burglary increasing as the recession bites having adequate cover is an absolute must. So go and check your contents insurance policy right away, ensure you have adequate cover in terms of value of what you own and check several insurers to make sure you have the best deal in terms of overall price, any excess you may have to pay in the event of any claim made and any restrictions that may be added. Certainly items over a certain value may not be covered (like wedding rings and other jewellery which may require an additional premium over and above what you are already paying on an annual basis. Watch out for any strange behaviour in your neighbourhood and alert the police if you see any suspicious.
